Muhazi Lake – Rwanda
Muhazi Lake is one of the most beautiful places in Rwanda, and it’s only a short drive of 40 km from Kigali to the east. It is a long, narrow body of water that forms the border between the Eastern and Northern Provinces. The water is surrounded by rolling hills, quiet towns, and patches of lush greenery. Lake Muhazi is a slower, more reflective place to visit as an easy get away from the busy city or the wildlife-focused Akagera National Park. It’s perfect for day trips, weekend breaks, or quiet vacations.
The lake is long approximately37km and shallow, with a depth of 10 – 16metres and 1,444 meters above sea level, flowing through a flooded valley.
The eastern side of Lake Muhazi is close to the famous Akagera Park.
The road to Nyagatare goes along the eastern shore of the lake, too scenic, making it a nice place to stop for travelers to enjoy lunch, a refreshing atmosphere or even spend some good time with the locals.
The lake is close to two medium sized towns, Rwesero and Gahini which have several eateries and accommodations like guest houses at good budget costs. From these towns, many water activities can be organised e.g. boat rides, swimming and birding.
Close to the lake is a legendary Anglican Cathedral where many worshipers go for Sunday worshiping and pilgrimage in August yearly.
