From the early 1970s up to the late 1980s, it was intact and covered by forests but was later destroyed in 1994 by the large number of Rwandans who fled their homes to seek refuge in this forest. As a result, the forest was mercilessly cleared for settlement which led to its destruction and death of wildlife creatures that resided there. From that time, the forest was less attractive for tourism not until 2007 when the Rwandan government and the Great Ape Trust collaborated to form a national conservation park to protect the rich biodiversity of the place. Part of the reserve has been restored; tree species have been planted, and more wildlife has been attracted to the park. The park now shelters over 20 chimpanzees, golden monkeys, blue monkeys, and L’Hoest monkeys and over 395 bird species. the park is currently open for a few activities like chimpanzee trekking, golden monkey tracking, waterfall hikes, and guided nature walks. The twin lakes of Bulera and Ruhondo The twin lakes are lava-dammed lakes located on the fringes of Volcanoes National Park. They act as an excellent diversion and travel option for any body returning from the gorilla trekking excursion. The lakes provide amazing views of the surrounding steep and terraced hills. A boat ride on the lakes helps you to explore the lakes and the surrounding islands like Bushongo, Muhabura, Munanira and Cuza. Chamudongo forest This is an isolated forest covering only 19 square kilometers and is part of Nyungwe National Park located in the south-western part of Rwanda. This forest was at first connected to Nyungwe Forest Park but due to deforestation and poaching, the forest became isolated.  Although it is isolated, Cyamudongo is still considered as part of Nyungwe National Park and one the main places where visitors go for chimpanzee trekking and other interesting adventures. It is a home to one habituated chimpanzee group with over 30 members and other primates like L’Hoest monkeys, Mona monkeys, and Colobus monkeys, and several bird and plant species.  Chamudongo is regarded as the best place to trek chimpanzees in Nyungwe National Park because they can be spotted as they reside in a small, forested area and can’t escape to the surrounding open land. Gorilla trekking is a sensational activity where travelers move into the jungles of the thick tropical rainforests to search for habituated gorilla families, when you find them spend one hour with them in their natural habitat. the gorilla trekking excursion is done in different countries in Africa but the most popular gorilla destinations are Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and Mgahinga National Park in Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Virunga National Park, and Kahuzi Biega National Park in Democratic Republic of Congo. Cost of  a gorilla trekking permit A gorilla permit is a lawful document that is issued to any traveler of 15 years and above to allow him/ her access to gorillas in their natural habitat. The cost of a gorilla permit varies per country. In Uganda,  a gorilla permit costs $800, in Rwanda, it costs $1500and in DRC Congo it is $400 per person.  How to acquire a gorilla permit Gorilla permits from different countries are acquired through different authorities, the Uganda Wildlife  Authority in Uganda (UWA), the Rwanda Development Board in Rwanda(RDB), and the Virunga Conservation Office in DRC Congo. Best time for gorilla trekking Gorilla trekking is an activity that is done throughout the year but the drier months in December to February and June to September are considered the best as the tracking trails are dry and passable and there’s little vegetation cover.  However, it’s not guaranteed that there’s totally no rain in these months because the parks are found in tropical rain forests where rain pours are expected at any time of the day. Guidelines for gorilla trekking  These are rules that were designed to protect both the primates and the trekkers while in the park premises.  some of these rules include. Only eight people may visit a gorilla group in a day. This helps to reduce the possibility of disease transmission and minimize disturbance of the gorilla group. The age limit for gorilla trekking is 15 years and the number of  people to visit a particular gorilla family is strictly 8 per day. Gorilla trekking for the elderly seniors, and the disabled Gorilla trekking is a thrilling activity that enables all persons of 15 years and about to have a wonderful encounter with the gentle giant apes in their natural habitat. It does not discriminate among people as long as you are above the minimum age and able to purchase a gorilla trekking permit. Gorilla treks for the elderly or disabled are organised the same way as for able-bodied people. The difference comes in when the elderly are allocated to gorilla families a short distance from the starting point and is usually done on special request.  However, everyone is entitled to having the best gorilla trekking excursion. Rwanda is one of the main countries with the main habitats for gorillas. It has mountain gorillas that reside in the Volcanoes National Park, a famous park in the country’s northwestern region. Volcanoes National Park houses over 12 habituated gorilla families ready for daily tracking. Gorilla tracking is a strenuous activity that requires one to be physically and mentally fit as the park is characterized by a mountainous terrain, with steep slopes, valleys, and volcanic peaks. It also comprises of rain forests, bamboo, swamps, grassland, and heath. Some gorilla families are so close to the starting point that finding them can take 30-45 minutes, while others that reside in the higher altitudinal zones can be sighted after trekking for 3- 6 hours. The park terrain is challenging, and at times, the trekking trails are muddy, thus a problem for the elderly and those with disabilities. Gorilla trekking for  the elderly, seniors and people with disabilities After the briefing, the park rangers and wardens check the passports to identify those who will need special attention. At times people above 60  years are not fit enough to go hiking through the  park jungles but if you are  60  and above and physically fit, don’t hesitate to go for the medium and long treks because there’s a lot to explore in the park. Expect to encounter different plants , insects, birds and other animals that reside along with the mountain gorillas in the same habitat. Allocating gorilla families is usually based on the availability of gorilla permits, so the elderly are advised to make early bookings at least three months in advance to get a family close to the starting point. Early bookings are not only recommended for the elderly and disabled by also for other  people who wish to participate in gorilla trekking. this is because only 8 people are allowed to visit a gorilla family per day and it helps them to avoid last-minute disappointments. It is always important for travelers to inform their tour operators about any physical inability. This will help them prepare special transportation from the airport or hotel of residence to the park and organize for the sedan chairs and porters.  Sedan chairs always have a steel base, four handler sand seat belts. Alternatively,  people with disabilities can be carried on stretchers made from local bamboo. 12 strong porters are assigned to carry the elderly to and from the gorilla family, they carry exchangeable and do not allow the client to touch the ground until they reach the gorillas, and after one hour of encounter, they carry him/her back to the starting point. Sedan chairs and carriers cost between $400 – $500 depending on the weight of the client.  The cost includes that of the porters who carry the client. Trekkers who can hike by themselves can hire porters to help them carry their backpacks and give them a hand at difficult sections of the hike. Such porters cost between $15 – $20. All hikers whether elderly or not are provided with hiking sticks but the elderly who have personal hiking sticks are free to use them. Gorilla trekking for the elderly in Bwindi National Park Bwindi National Park is not part of the Virunga volcanos. The terrain of Bwindi is not as steep as the other three homes that is Mgahinga National Park, Volcanoes National Park, and Virunga National Park. Many of the gorilla families in Bwindi reside in lower altitude areas which makes hiking easier. It should also be noted that Bwindi has more habituated gorilla families available for tracking.  21 habituated gorilla families can be sighted from the four sectors of the park (Buhoma, Rushaga, Ruhija, and Nkuringo) which provides trekkers a choice of where to go trekking. however early booking is recommended for all trekkers especially the elderly and disabled to be assigned to a family closer to the starting point.  Ruhija and Rushaga are highly recommended for the elderly, seniors and disabled as per the recorded observations of the past trekkers. However, the trekking time is unpredictable. Time spent in in the park jungles largely depends on the location of the gorillas but whether you go for the short medium, or long trek, the experience is evenly rewarding.  Other things to consider when preparing a  trek for the elderly Security is one of the key factors that most travelers think about as they plan their safaris.  The gorilla parks are close to DRC Congo, a country that has been considered insecure for many years. However, tourists should not worry because as they go into the forest jungles, they are led by armed ranger guides who help to protect them from human and wildlife attacks. Good enough Uganda and Rwanda haven’t faced any militia attacks for the last two decades thus rendering the gorilla parks safe. Even the security in DRC is also tightened, countless security checks and more escorts are provided to ease tourism. This safari involves visiting two of Rwanda’s most famous parks that is Volcanoes National Park and Nyungwe national Park. Exploring these national parks is one way of protecting the habitat of these amazing wild creatures. Gorilla trekking Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is carried out in Volcanoes National Park which is located in the northwestern part of the country in  Ruhengeri district. This park comprises five of the eight volcanos that make up the Virunga ranges. The volcanos include Mount Karisimbi(4507m), Mount Sabinyo (3669m), Mount Muhabura (4127m), Mount Bisoke(3711m) and Mount Gahinga (3473m). This park borders Uganda and DRC Congo which all make up the Virunga Conservation area. This park has coverage of 160sq km with rich montane ecosystems that embrace the ever-green bamboo forest, open grassland, and a home for mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, and other wild creatures.  Gorilla trekking starts with an early morning briefing at 7 am at Kinigi Park headquarters. Trekkers are later placed in groups of 8 members who later set off with the guidance of trained game guides and armed rangers to meet the great apes in their natural habitat. Allocations are made according to the level of physical fitness and health. The elderly and disabled have a chance to request shorter treks and are allocated to visit gorilla families close to the starting point. This is because gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park involves a lot of hiking through different altitudes and rugged terrain. When briefing and allocation are done, each trekker is provided with a walking stick, and the actual trekking starts at 8 am. Volcanoes National Park has only 12 habituated gorilla families meaning that only 96 permits are available daily for tracking. visitors are advised to book early enough at least 3 months before their travel dates and each gorilla permit costs $1500 and is only issued to persons of 15 years and above. Rules to be followed in the gorilla trekking excursion -The time to be spent with the mountain gorillas is one hour. Once you have an encounter, use your time profitably. Do not use flash cameras for photography as this threatens them away. – Keep your voices low as you trek and keep watching out for other wildlife in the park. – Avoid coming so close to the gorillas,  maintain a 7-metre distance They are so inquisitive and may want to come close to you. As they try approaching you,  slowly move back at least five meters. Avoid using body language like raising the arms or pointing at them as they may consider them as threats, and they run away or attack you for self-defence. If any gorilla charges or when the silverback beats his chest, do not run away, keep calm and leave the rangers to handle the situation. -Avoid smoking, eating, and drinking in the presence of the gorillas as they may attack you with the need to grab your food. The remaining pieces of the cigars can cause fire outbreaks that can destroy their habitat. -Do not leave any waste in the park. pick up all the food droppings, wipes, tissue, and used water bottles and dump them in the garbage bins at the park head quarters or at your hotel. After the amazing trekking excursion, trekkers are awarded with trekking certificate as appreciation of their contribution to gorilla protection and habitat conservation.  Gorilla trekking safaris are always combined with a visit to the gorilla guardian’s village to meet the community members who were gorilla poachers but later turned into conservationists and promoters of Rwandan culture and tradition.  From Volcanoes National Park tourists travel to Nyungwe National Park for the  Chimpanzee trekking experience. Nyungwe National Park is East Africa’s intact chimpanzee home. It is an ideal place for making early morning observations of chimpanzees another group of endangered primate species in the wilderness. This park is a high-altitude mountainous forest found in the southern part of Rwanda. It is the largest protected mountain park in Africa with a coverage of approximately 1600 – 2000 square kilometers harbouring several wildlife creatures with chimpanzees as the best attraction for different tourists.
