This 2 days Akagera joining safari focuses on travelling in a group for discoveries about the park in habitats. Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s only savanna park famously known for housing the most sought- after big five animals of Africa and other wildlife creatures.  This indeed one of the places you should not mis while on your Rwanda safari. The park offers several activities but with this 2 days Akagera national park joining, we embark on discovering different mammal species through game drives and guided nature walks in the park.

On this 2-day trip to Akagera National Park you will join others in groups of 2or more members, drive in our 4X4 safari jeep that accommodate 5 – 8 people, with a pop-up roof for easy game viewing. You will explore the open plains, bushes and woodlands to see a variety of animals in Akagera. With joining a group, you can extend your days/stay in the park due to reduced/shared costs.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Akagera national park- day game drive – night game drive

Meet your driver at an agreed location in Kigali after an early morning breakfast. Embark on a 2.5hours drive to Akagera National Park in the eastern part of the country.

On arrival, register at the park centre (southern gate), get a short briefing from the park rangers, pay park entrance fees and start on a short game drive in the southern part of the park.   This part is filled with acacia thickets and woodlands, expect to spot several animals like impalas, zebras, reedbuck, black rhinos, giraffes, and other animals.  After this brief park exploration, drive to the lodge for lunch.

After lunch, you may decide to relax at the lodge or go for a late afternoon boat cruise on Lake Ihema. At 6pm, join the game rangers for a night game drive where you will luckily spot nocturnal mammals including the elusive leopard, lions, bush babies(galagos), hyenas, civets, mangoose and porcupines. After your experience, head to your hotel for dinner and night overstay at Akagera game lodge.

Day 2: Walk the line experience – game drive -transfer to Kigali.

After an early morning breakfast, transfer to the park centre to participate in the walk the line experience. With the leadership of a game guide, explore the park on foot to the top of the hill which gives you amazing views of the park from all directions.  You will also get exposed to other small park in habitats that cannot be spotted on a game drive like squirrels, mangoose, snakes, wild cats and many bird species. The walk takes around 2 hours. Later return to the lodge, with your packed lunch, check out and drive slowly  out of the park while spotting animals in the northern sector. This sector is known for hosting most of the animals in this park especially in the kilala plains.  Some of the common animals here include buffaloes, zebra, topi, impala, elephants, warthogs. The abundance of antelopes and other grazing animals makes the plains a favorite hunting ground for the lions and hyenas and other predators. In the fringes of the plains are woodlands and thickets, the giraffes and elephants can be seen. Predators especially the lions are often find shelter from the afternoon heat under trees, after successful morning hunt in the Kilala plains.

After the game drive shall have picnic lunch, exit the park and travel back to Kigali.

Optional activity:

Hot air balloon experience: This is a magical experience that provides aerial views of the park.  This ia an early morning preparation that starts at 5am, lasting for 45 minutes. With this activity, you can witness all the park corners that cannot be accessed while on a game drive.
