After driving for 30 kilometres from Kigali, you will reach Nyamata, a former catholic church but currently converted into a genocide memorial site to remember the lives of over 50,000 victims who died there as they had sought refuge during the 1994 Rwanda genocide. The Nyamata Genocide Memorial offers visitors a space for reflection and serves as a potent reminder of Rwanda’s past. In addition to its historical value, the surrounding area offers a serene contrast to the busy life of the city because it is filled with open fields and calm rural surroundings.

Rwamagana- the capital of the Eastern province

As you proceed to the East, find a lively town Rwamagana dotted with vibrant surroundings, gentle slopes and broader horizons. this a great spot to have a quick coffee, stretch your legs to the market for some refreshments as you also interact with the locals.

Lake Muhazi

Tips for driving along the Eastern province

Road and driving conditions:

The main road from Kigali through Rwamagana to Kayonza is well paved and in good condition, but when you branch off towards the park, it is dusty. this calls for extra care when driving, keep an eye on cyclists, pedestrians and crossing livestock.

Gas supplies:

Fuel stations are   available in bigger towns like Kayonza and Rwamagana, therefore travelers are advised to refuel to full tanks to avoid getting stuck in the park and other remote areas.

Weather and timing:

The Eastern Province is hotter than any other part of Rwanda. as you set off for your exploration, start your journey in the early morning, to avoid midday heat, carry hats and sunglasses especially in the dry season. If you are travelling in the wet season, you should have a strong 4×4 WD vehicle because the dirt roads tend to be slippery.

Best time to travel to the eastern province

The time of visit to Rwanda’s eastern province largely depends on one’s interests. For travelers to Rwanda’s eastern province especially to Akagera National Park, the period between June to September and December to February is considered best. This is because the roads are dry and passable, wildlife can easily be spotted, and the skies are clear to enable photography.

The rainy season in March to May and October to November, though a bit challenging, the vegetation is lush green providing a scenic environment for photography, it attracts fewer crowds and birding can be done optimally.
