International travellers must present both their passports and visas. East African passport holders do not require visas to cross to East African Community (EAC) member states like Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Somalia, DR Congo, and Burundi.

Drivers should have a valid National Driver’s license, and for international drivers, an international driving Permit is mandatory.

If you are travelling across East African states, the vehicle should have a COMESA certificate that provides for regional third-party vehicle insurance, legal liability, and the stay of the vehicle in a COMESA member state, and catering for the occupants’ medical expenses in case of emergency damages.

A certified copy of the vehicle registration or vehicle license papers must be shown at the border posts. A letter from the company authorizing you to take the vehicle across the border is required, with specific travel dates. The owner of the vehicle (individual or rental company) must sign both the letter and the license papers. If you are not the registered owner of the vehicle, please ensure you have an affidavit from the police authorizing you, on behalf of the Company or owner, to take the vehicle to another country.
