Crossing the border with a rental car

Crossing the border  with a rental car, Are you ready to rent a car and go on an amazing road trip through several countries? Traveling by land is always an exciting adventure, no matter what region or country you go through. When you rent a car, the thought of crossing countries can be scary. But if you read the fine print, it may be much easier than you think. Here are some tips on how to drive your rental car into another country.

Can I take my rental car into another country?

In Rwanda, rental companies allow both guided and self-drive travelers to cross to the neighboring countries, especially members of the East African Community like Uganda, Kenya, Burundi, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, plus other African countries mainly for tourism purposes. However, crossing to another country comes with an extra charge that is not part of the rental fee.

Travellers must notify the rental company of their rental plans that involve crossing to another country and the specific time of their return. This helps them to approve the car rental within and outside the country. Failure to inform them of your plans results in a breach of contract, nullifies your insurance, and forfeits any breakdown coverage.

Essentials for crossing the borders of East African countries.

International travellers must present both their passports and visas. East African passport holders do not require visas to cross to East African Community (EAC) member states like Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Somalia, DR Congo, and Burundi.

Drivers should have a valid National Driver’s license, and for international drivers, an international driving Permit is mandatory.

If you are travelling across East African states, the vehicle should have a COMESA certificate that provides for regional third-party vehicle insurance, legal liability, and the stay of the vehicle in a COMESA member state, and catering for the occupants’ medical expenses in case of emergency damages.

A certified copy of the vehicle registration or vehicle license papers must be shown at the border posts. A letter from the company authorizing you to take the vehicle across the border is required, with specific travel dates. The owner of the vehicle (individual or rental company) must sign both the letter and the license papers. If you are not the registered owner of the vehicle, please ensure you have an affidavit from the police authorizing you, on behalf of the Company or owner, to take the vehicle to another country.

Choosing a vehicle for your cross-border expedition

The success of your cross-border adventure largely depends on the type of vehicle you choose.   4×4 WD vehicles are most popular and best for such safaris due to their adaptability to traverse varying terrain across East Africa.

The different road conditions across countries mean that vehicles need to be ready for anything, whether it’s smooth paved roads or bumpy rural dirt paths. Toyota Land Cruiser rentals provide fantastic and dependable performance on tough terrains.

If you’re looking for comfort on long journeys and cross-border safaris, the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, V6, and V8 are the top choices. These luxury SUV options include well-defined features like air conditioning and comfortable seats that make them more valuable and best for extended safaris.

In addition to the luxury SUVs, at Self Drive Rwanda, we provide more rental vehicles that can be used for cross-border safaris, including Toyota Land Cruisers, LX, TXL, GX, 70 and 78 series, hard tops, extended with elevated seating positions and popup roofs that can be used for game viewing and best navigation through rough terrain.

Cross-border routes from Rwanda

The most popular cross-border route from Rwanda is the Rwanda-Uganda border. The frequently used points are the Gatuna and Cyanika border posts.  Their routes connect to Uganda’s diverse tourist attractions, including Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for mountain gorilla trekking, and Queen Elizabeth National Park for game viewing.

Tanzania offers another popular destination for cross-border safaris via the Rusumo border. This route provides access to Tanzania’s famous travel parks like Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park, Arusha National Park, and many other travel destinations. A journey to these parks requires planning as it involves lengthy travels through diverse terrain, thus requiring a perfect vehicle selection of a standard 4×4 WD.

The Democratic Republic of Congo presents unique cross-border opportunities for adventurous travellers via the Goma/ Gisenyi border post. Though traveling to DR Congo is not so frequent due to security issues, once there, you will find an adventurous and rewarding travel destination.

Connecting from Rwanda to Kenya, but it involves multiple border crossings, either through Uganda or Tanzania. Such a journey requires long-term rental, and here at Self Drive Rwanda, we are ready to provide a long-term rental from Rwanda to Kenya so that you can explore more about the famous national parks like Masai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo West and East, the vibrant cities of Nairobi and Mombasa, and the breeze of the Indian Ocean.  A journey from Rwanda to Kenya is challenging but so rewarding.

How much should I pay for an across-border safari?

Your cross-border rental fee depends on where you are going. After specifying which type of vehicle you want for your rental, the number of days you are to spend with the vehicle, and your travel destination, let your rental company provide all the necessary information, documentation, and charges needed for your safari.

Expect to go higher than the usual rental car fees and covering cross-border insurance fees and regional taxes.

Can I drop off a rental car in another country?

Returning a rental car in a different country from where it was rented can be an option, depending on the supplier, but it typically comes with extra costs, such as paying for fuel and a driver to return the vehicle. This is commonly referred to as the one-way rental policy. Rental companies typically exhibit limited flexibility regarding the drop-off of their vehicles in a different country compared to their policies on temporary crossings.

Planning and organizing are key when it comes to crossing borders with a rental car from Rwanda. Having the right documents, keeping an eye on your rental agreement, and following the rules of both Rwanda and the neighboring country will help you have a smooth and enjoyable journey. It’s a good idea to be ready for a few delays at border crossings and to get to know the driving conditions in the country you’re visiting. With a bit of planning, driving through East Africa can be a delightful and unforgettable adventure.
