Chimpanzee habituation is a gradual process through wild chimps get used to human presence without changing their normal/natural behavior. Habituation enables researchers, environmentalists, and tourists see chimpanzees in their natural environment, which helps with scientific investigation, conservation, and promotes ecotourism.
Chimpanzee habituation takes several years, approximately 2-3 years, this because the chimpanzees are highly intelligent creatures, very cautious, and so complex. Rangers and trackers spend long hours of the day following, observing the behavior and movements of the chimps daily. Habituation requires time, consistency, and careful attention to conservation rules. this activity is far different from breeding the chimps are neither tamed or controlled. The process lets chimps live normally and naturally as they are made accustomed to comfort in presence of humans for some hours in a day. This helps them to become less aggressive to humans.
Where is Chimpanzee habituation conducted in Nyungwe Forest park?
Unlike other main activities like chimpanzee tracking which mainly takes place starting from Uwinka and Cyamudongo. Chimpanzee habituation takes place in Gisovu in the northern part of Nyungwe forest Park. the chimpanzees here are fully habituated: this enables the guests together with the trackers and guides to collect data, study their behaviour, diet, movements and tolerance to human presence.
The habituation process.
This activity is carefully structured, on a daily routine, park rangers, researchers and trackers go into the forest jungles to search for chimpanzee nests and vocals which helps them to identify the direction of the chimps’ movements.
in the start, chimpanzees scream, run away and at times behave aggressively, but with gradual interactions, they get familiar with human voices, smells and appearances.
With daily monitoring, researchers keep on documenting about social interactions within the chimpanzee family, such as grooming, feeding, mating, communicating and self defence.
Once the family is fully or partially habituated, it can be opened for the habituation visits that involve visitors. however, this is done with strict supervision and following a set of guidelines.
The number of visitors for the habituation experience must be only four, this helps to minimise stress on the animals.
Participants must maintain a safe distance from the chimpanzees to avoid any agitation that leads to aggressive behavior.
Avoid loud noises that will scare the chimps leading them to distant locations or getting to higher tree branches of the forest canopy.
Listening and following the ranger instructions yields a successful experience.

Best time for chimpanzee habituation in Gisovu – Nyungwe Forest park
Chimpanzee habituation is a wildlife experience that can be done at any time of the year though the park experiences during weather conditions seasonally. In the dry months (June to September and December to February), hiking trails are drier and passable though the hikes tend to take longer hours because the chimps move deeper into the jungles to search for food. Since this park lies in an equatorial rain forest, rain showers are expected at any time of the day, so its not a guarantee that there’s no rain in what is considered as the dry season. The wet months (Mach to May and October to November) experience daily rain showers making the trails muddy and slippery. However, the chimpanzees are easily located as they don’t move into deeper parts of the forest as food is almost everywhere. this makes spotting them easier. So, the time you prefer to embark on this activity, largely depends on your interests to visit this park.
