Rwanda’s eastern province

The Eastern Province in Rwanda is one of the five provinces that make up the country. it is the largest, most popular but with the least population. This province was created in 2006 as part of the country’s decentralisation programme of organising government structures. With Rwamagana as its capital, the province comprises seen districts namely, Bugesera, Gatsibo, Kayonza, Kirehe, Ngoma, Nyagatare and Rwamagana. But the former provinces were Kibungo, Umutara, most parts of rural Kigali and parts of Byumba.

The province covers approximately 9,458squre kilometres, a total population of roughly 3.5million people depending on results from the 2022 population census.

The province is defined by vast landscapes with verdant biodiversity and plays a great role in the country’s economic transformation as it houses the popular home of the big five wild animals, Akagera National Park and other scenic tourist attractions. The geographical structure of the area is characterised by low- lying terrain, open grasslands, wetlands, rivers, lakes and hilly landscapes.

The Eastern province shares borders with Uganda and Tanzania making it a favourite place for trade especially at border posts like Rusumo and Kagitumba.

Livelihood in the area is centred on agriculture. Crops grown include corn, beans, cassava and bananas which are grown on the lush plains, and the major aspect of rural life is rearing livestock, especially cattle. since the climate in this area is relatively dry, modern farming methods like irrigation have been encouraged, which helps to improve productivity and resilience.

Culture in the area is reflected in traditions rooted in community resilience and unity.  Cattle keeping as the main cultural heritage is an important symbol of wealth and social status. At ceremonies and community events, story telling, music and dance are essential as they are unifying symbol and a way to rebuild the country from its dark past to reconciliation and progress.

Tourism and development (Important places to visit in the Eastern Province)

The Eastern Province’s tourism industry is growing steadily, mostly due to the presence of different tourism places some of which include.

Akagera National Park.

This is the number one attraction in region and the top-most tourist destination covering over 1200sq km, renowned for its unique scenery and wildlife, majorly the big five: elephants, lions, Leopards, buffaloes and rhinos. Thanks to the conservation efforts by Rwanda Development Board and African Park to bring back the existence of these famous wildlife creatures.

Akagera National Park offers game drives where tourists get to encounter other wild animals, boat safaris on the different lakes especially lake Ihema, enjoy bird watching and many other activities within and outside the park.

Rusumo falls

Rusumo falls is a beautiful waterfall at the border of Tanzania and Rwanda. It is a famous stop for tourists exploring Rwanda’s Eastern Province because of its wide waterfall and peaceful surroundings. It also has beautiful views and historical significance. Visitors to the fall can participate in activities like birding, swimming, guided nature walks as well as having the best photography.

Lake Muhazi

Another well-liked tourist destinations in Rwanda’s Eastern Province, is Lake Muhazi. The lake, spans multiple districts and is well-known for its serene waters and magnificent scenery, providing an oasis of peace from the stressful city life. Along the lake banks, visitors engage in activities like fishing, water sports, and birding. It’s perfect for leisure and photography because the surrounding hills offer breathtaking views, especially at sunrise and sunset.

Additionally, Lake Muhazi is home to several lakeside resorts and eateries where guests get to sample the local delicacies while admiring the serene setting. It is an ideal location for day visits and weekend vacations due to its quick accessibility from Kigali.

Ntarama genocide memorial site

In Bugesera district in Ntarama genocide memorial site that serves as a solemn reminder of the tragic events of the 1994 Rwanda genocide. This place was once a church and was used for refuge in 1994 during the genocide era.  In April 1995, this church was converted to a genocide memorial site to commemorate the lies of over 50,000 people who were killed inside this place.

Inside the church are the victims’ personal possessions and remains, to ensure that their memories are never forgotten. Clothing, tools, and skulls on display at the site aid in telling the story of what transpired. The restored building offers visitors a very painful and instructive experience.

Though it’s a tourist attraction, this place is not for leisure but reflection, learning and remembrance. It a great opportunity to learn the dangers of hatred and division and also witness the journey to forgiveness and reconciliation.

It is incredibly humble to visit the Ntarama Genocide Memorial. It promotes awareness, empathy, peace, responsibility and respect for one another.

 Akanyaru river

This river is a major tributary of the big Nyabarongo river that originates from Burundi and flows east ward then northward to Rwanda. This river supports a rich eco system that separates Rwanda and Burundi. The river is surrounded by lush vegetation and marshland that house different birds making it a favourable birders paradise. The Akanyaru wetland is also home for some aquatic creatures, and so ideal for photography.

Birding in Bugesera

In Bugesera district are different birding spots, so exceptional for nature enthusiasts mainly the birders. The prominent spots include Kamatana, Rumira, Mbuganzeri, and Gashora birdwatching spot. Some of the bird species in these areas include Papyrus Gonolek, Green and Marsh Sandpipers, Purple Swamphens, grey crowned cranes, Common Moorhens, and many others.
