Stretching along the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lake Kivu is one of Africa’s most stunning freshwater lakes in the Albertine region. Napoleon Island is situated on Lake Kivu close to Karongi (Kibuye). The island’s harsh terrain, which includes steep rocky slopes and thick flora, was created thousands of years ago as a result of volcanicity.

Natural beauty and wildlife

Napoleon Island has steep cliffs that have preserved some of the native flora and fauna.  Some domestic animals are unable to access the vegetation due to the island’s steep and rocky side, which has made it hard for the island to be productive.  As a result, certain areas of the island have a very dense forest and bush cover, which offers some fascinating wildlife a final haven.  This island was declared a conservation area.  there are no developments like construction, or agricultural practices.  So, if you are to explore the island, come along with a packed meal and don’t leave any trash on the island for conservation purposes.

The most famous creatures on the island are fruit bats. Napoleon Island is home to a colony of up to 40,000 straw-colored fruit bats. These fruit bats are frequently thought to bring chaos and disturbance, and some people chase them away thinking they are a misfortune. After human interference, the fruit bats discovered this isolated island in Lake Kivu and made it a final home because the large trees where they used to spend the day were frequently cut down. On Napoleon Island, the bats are always spotted hanging in the tops of the trees. The colony is directly beneath one of the hiking trails. When visiting, try not to disturb the bats because they might easily clash with people and at times feel compelled to leave the island.

Other wildlife creatures that have been discovered on the island are snakes. Though there is no official   discovery, some snake species like the forest cobras have been seen on the island. The snakes normally avoid human contact, while on your escape to this pristine island, remember to be extra careful.  if you spot a snake, keep distance, don’t kill, touch and never interfere with their movements.

Birds are another group of wildlife species on Napoleon Island. Some of the types that can be spotted here include the Palm- nut vulture, African Kingfisher, Abyssinian Thrush, African Cuckoo -Hawk, and the Hammerkop among others.

Activities on Napoleon Island

Hiking: This is the most popular activity on the island. hiking trails run from one side to the other and can be managed by hikers of all levels: from learners to experienced hikers. Immerse yourself into the expansive views of Lake Kivu and the surrounding area as you hike through the thick flora and volcanic rocks. its always a short hike that last s for 30- 60 minutes but offering a rewarding adventure. at the summit, enjoy a 360 degrees views of lake Kivu and other scenic points of Rwanda like the distant Virunga volcanoes.

Bird watching: Napoleon Island is a haven for birdwatchers and photographers. While on the island, expect to see a variety of migratory bird species especially waterfowls, so keep your binoculars and cameras close at hand. Over 50 bord species can be spotted on the island including the fish eagles, palm -nut vultures, brown throated wattle -eye, sun birds among others. Due to its isolated and secret location, the island serves as an important refuge for these winged species.

How to get to Napoleon Island.

Accessing Napoleon Island is a combination of boating and wildlife experiences. You can reach the island by only using a boat ride.  Boat rides can be organised by your hotel tour companies or cooperatives from Gisenyi or Karongi. A boat ride to the island takes 30 – 45 minutes by a local boat.

Its also more adventurous if you extend your Napoleon Island visit to other islands on the lake such as Amahoro (Peace) Island, Monkey Island, Nkombo island, Amizero Island, Iwawa Island, Nyamirundi Island, Mpembe Islands and Karwera Islands among others.
